There are just so many options when it comes to drinks, and it’s easy to be confused about what's right in terms of your health. Virginia Gay Hospital's Clinical Dietitian and Diabetes Educator, Sara Wattnem, RD, LD will be on hand to offer guidance on the best bets available in the daily battle of the beverages we all face. 

 

CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECKS 

Chief Ted Paxton and other members of the Vinton Police Department will be offering child safety seat checks at this event as well as having a Student Resource Officer information table. The K-9 Unit will also be making an appearance.

 

PRIZE DRAWINGS &

In addition to a variety of FREEBIES you can pick up as you make your way through all of this year's exhibitors, you’ll also receive a punch card when you first enter the fair.  Get one punch at every exhibit you visit! Turn in your completed punch card to be entered for drawings based on the number of punches you've gathered. Items for these drawings have been generously donated by many of our exhibitors!

 

BLOOD GLUCOSE SCREENINGS

Virginia Gay Family Medical Clinics will be providing blood glucose screenings which can help identify high blood sugar and identify a risk factor that may increase your chances of developing or experiencing complications to your health from diabetes.

 

VORC (VINTON OFF ROAD CYCLISTS)

Learn more about this group and local opportunities for cycling, hiking, walking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and trail running. They will also be debuting their new fleet of rental bikes(!) Stop by, size them up and try them out.

 

BONE HEALTH & MAMMOGRAPHY

Do you know the connection between bone loss and your risk for a fracture? Learn more about bone mineral analysis from the Virginia Gay Hospital Imaging/Radiology Department and how this health screening can help detect osteoporosis and predict your risk for bone fractures. Information on 2D vs. 3D Mammography and how early detection makes all the difference in a breast cancer diagnosis will also be available.

Learn how this group meets its goals for the kids in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District: 1.) Source local products; 2.) Make healthy food options available; 3.) Provide fresh, good tasting food; 4.) Support long term health by introducing a variety of fruits and vegetables. 

MILLENNIUM THERAPY

NEW FOR 2019! DON'T MISS THIS demonstration of exercises you can do at home to help you stay healthy and active. PLUS: The Vinton Lutheran Home-Home Health Agency will be on hand to do Memory Screening, and they will be handing out samples of brain exercises, to keep your mind sharp. Learn more about the monthly dementia support group "Coping with Dementia over Coffee and Donuts," which takes place the third Tuesday of every month.

REACH OUT & READ

The Virginia Gay Hospital Family Medical Clinics will be offering FREE BOOKS to kids 6 months to 5 years as part of their Reach Out and Read program while supplies last. More information about the Reach Out Read program is available at www.myvghfoundation.org

 

DRIVING SIMULATOR

Virginia Gay Hospital Therapy Services will be demonstrating a driving simulator that tests reaction time, visual scanning and use of the steering wheel that is part of their Occupational Therapy department.

 

MENTAL HEALTH    

AWARENESS & SERVICES

There will be several booths with information on mental health and wellness, ways to relieve stress, anxiety, depression. Learn when to contact a mental health provider regarding child and adult concerns. Information on mental health awareness and accessing services through the Abbe Center, Foundation2 and Virginia Gay Family Medical Clinics.

 

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES*

Other Outdoor Games sponsored by the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department (VPRD) include super-size Jenga, and Connect 4.

 

NEW FOR 2019! VPRD will also have information inside the fair on how you can rent kayaks and bicycles to better explore our community's water ways and bike trails.

BENTON COUNTY DISASTER RECOVERY COALITION

Being prepared for a disaster can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families, and individuals should know what to do in the event of a disaster, where to go, and know how to care for their basic and medical needs. ** FREE RED CROSS EMERGENCY KITS ** Receive your FREE Emergency Kit while supplies last. Each drawstring bag includes emergency rations, a dust mask, emergency poncho, emergency survival blanket, emergency first aid guide, first aid kit, magnetic flash light, emergency drinking water & a whistle.

VSCSD SUMMER

FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

DID YOU KNOW FREE Breakfast and Lunch meals are available in Vinton and Shellsburg throughout the summer break? Kids 18 years old and younger are welcome regardless of financial status. Plus you do not have to live within the School District. (Minimal charge for adult meals.) Meet the organizers and learn more about this summer program!

 

“RESILIENT VINTON”

NEW FOR 2019! The University of Iowa– Iowa Flood Center’s Flood Resilience Team and Iowa Valley RC&D have partnered to create a flood resilient plan for Vinton, IA. This project, entitled, “Resilient Vinton”, is part of the Iowa Watershed Approach. Resilient Vinton is a year-long endeavor to engage residents and local leaders in strategies and activities outlined in the Institute for Social and Environment Transition-International Climate Resilience Framework (ISET-CRF). The goal of this project is to assist the community members in creating a meaningful/actionable flood resilience plan, and to empower them to remain engaged in flood-resilient, civic participation year-round.

PINK HEALS  

EASTERN IOWA

NEW FOR 2019! The Pink Heals fire truck and police car will be on display! Pink Heals volunteers take these pink vehicles on home visits to those in need. They partner with businesses to provide visit recipients with donated goods, gift cards and services. The color pink is used to represent love and care rather than to signify a specific disease. Pink Heals is about more than just breast cancer. It is about all illnesses and needs within our communities.

 

CHOOSE TO RISE

Choose to RISE is all about helping connect people to tools that help them move more, eat better and improve their mindsets. Learn more about this community of support for living a healthy lifestyle that's not about special diets or extreme workouts.
